Isabelle shook her head, saying what we all knew already.

“Too slow.”

Liam looked as if he had more pressing troubles, like his need to ditch the bourbon. He headed for the forest, not making anything near a straight line.

If you’ve never seen a dragon puke, trust me—you can do without the view.

Nick gestured to Garrett. They eyed each other, and I knew that neither of them wanted Adrian to win.

I kind of did.

Especially since they were both being such jerks.

Strange how Garrett had even more of those orange sparks clustered around his head than Nick. Maybe they were affecting his brain.

Isabelle gave Garrett a mark and he roared with fury, shifting so quickly that the blue of his shimmer nearly blinded me. It was as if he had been struck by lightning.

Or he had generated it.

Either way, the blue flash was so bright that I had no idea where he hid his clothes. He was suddenly in front of us, resplendent and gleaming in his dragon form. His garnet scales were gorgeous and rich in hue, the gold edges making him look like a real prize.

There was a challenge in his eyes, as well as a whole lot of pride when he looked at Isabelle.

“You’re in first place,” she told him. It was an unnecessary confirmation of an obvious truth, but maybe saying it made her feel a part of it all.

Adrian offered one claw in congratulations. Gracious. I liked that. Garrett smiled as they shook.

Funny, but dragons always look hungry when they smile.

Nick eyed me, but I shook my head. “Lady’s choice,” I said when he might have argued. “After you.”
